Adwords Learning Center

Adwords is the twin to Adsense. Adwords has various uses. I'm going to address two of them here. The first is creating targeted ads that are designed to drive traffic to your websites. These are the ads you see on so many websites. Google is able to target the ads to the websites that have content to match the ad. This way the web searcher finds what they want, the advertiser gets customers and Google gets paid, a win-win situation.

The second use for Adwords is to use it as a researching tool. This is useful if you are setting up niche marketing websites. Once you find a niche to work in after using the keyword tool from Google you need to make sure that the keywords you want to use get traffic. To do this you create an Adwords ad with the keywords in it and then see how many impressions you get after running the ad for a day. This way you know that you will be setting up a website that will generate income. Keep your initial bid prices for the clicks low at this point. You want impressions not clicks.

Before you start placing your ads you need to figure out how much you can spend on your Adwords campaign and be profitable. This is a simple process. Let's say your conversion rate of people visiting your website to purchasing your product is 1%. (This is a common number) Also assume that your CPC is $0.10 and that your product nets you $10 per sale. So for 100 clicks you make one sale for $10 and pay $10 for your ad campaign, break-even. Make sure to not spend more than $0.10 per click. If you want to be able to spend more then you can increase your conversion rate or increase the cost of your product.

Now that you know the amount you can spend to be profitable you need to create your ad. Follow these steps:

  1. Pick the language and countries you want your ads to run in.
  2. Write your ad. An ad consists of a headline and two lines describing the ad.
    1. The headline needs to be an attention grabber. If you put your keyword in the headline then the text will be made bold.
    2. As briefly as possible describe what you are selling and make it clear what the benefit is for your product or service. You will have 35 characters per line.
  3. Put in your keywords and phrases. These come in three types:
    1. Broad Match - these trigger an ad to show anytime the keyword is in the search.
    2. Phrase Match - these trigger an ad only when your phrase is in the search.
    3. Exact Match - these trigger an ad only when the search exactly matches your keywords.
  4. Get your ad running. You will want to make a second ad that is a variation on the first ad. This way you can test which one does better. By doing this you will be able to make your ads better over time and increase your profitability.
  5. You should also target your ads so it will be easier to track them. Do this by setting up ad campaigns. One for CPC, one for search and one for content. Otherwise it will be difficult to figure out which ads are doing the best since the search traffic will be mixed together.
